What is Classical Homeopathy?

Classical Homeopathy is a system of medicine founded over 200 years ago by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in Germany (late 1700’s, early 1800s). Homeopathy uses the concept of “like cures like” in which a single remedy is chosen to resolve the totality of symptoms–a complex history including current medical complaints, previous ailments, personality, behaviors and mood. This method is in contrast to Clinical Homeopathy, which can use multiple remedies at the same time to address acute/recent symptoms. Most people using homeopathy regularly with Boiron remedies for cough/cold or warts, or arnica for pain etc are using Clinical Homeopathy.

In Homeopathy, any plant, mineral or animal substance can become a remedy. The original substance is placed in water, and through repeated dilutions, and succussion (vigorous shaking) of the dilutions, the remedy is potentized and suitable for use. Each remedy no longer has the actual substance in it, and instead carries a potentized energetic property for use in healing.

In Classical Homeopathy, a single remedy is chosen at a time to best represent the totality of ALL the symptoms of a patient rather than giving a patient a myriad of remedies that correspond to each individual symptom. The dosing in Classical Homeopathy starts low and uses more time between dosing, to allow the body’s natural healing mechanisms to do their work. The goal is to find the patient’s ideal remedy (the Simillimum) at that time, something which could change during the course of treatment.

Combining a homeopathic evaluation with a hands on evaluation with Osteopathy can help more accurately choose the best remedy for the patient, and help to reduce the likelihood of an adverse response or aggravation to the remedy. This can help reduce the time for resolution of symptoms and avoid the questions that arise when taking multiple remedies at the same time (such as which one is actually helping, or which is causing the aggravation, or which should be sustained on a longer basis).

With Homeopathy, the practitioner observes the “Law of Cure” meaning that we cure from the inside out, and from top to bottom. So the mood issue may clear before the hip pain that brought a patient in for treatment. In some ways this is similar to the Osteopathic treatment response, in that we clear symptoms in an order that may differ from the patient’s preference. The patient needs to be patient with the process, and aware that symptoms may not resolve in the priority order given by the patient.

Who benefits the most from Classical Homeopathy?

While all people and conditions could warrant Homeopathic evaluation and treatment, those individuals already taking a myriad of homeopathic remedies or who have used them frequently throughout life, may not be a candidate for Classical Homeopathy. Likewise, patients who are currently taking more than 5 or so prescribed medications, or who are using many different herbal remedies and unwilling to stop them, are also not candidates for Classical Homeopathy with Dr. Reeh at this time.
